Short, simple poems for our time

Trying times

Try everything once, my old mother would say

Except incest, folk dancing, and liver

She was winding me up, the old sod, even so

In the fullness of time, I’d forgive her

For I gave it a go, and tried everything once

But at first it proved hard to succeed

So, I tried again twice, on proverbial advice

And that adage proved useful indeed

For there’s no harm in trying, as everyone knows

Nothing good comes around ‘till it’s earned

“You’ve just gotta get up and try, try”, goes the song

“Where there’s flame, someone’s gonna get burned”

And the world loves a trier, it’s frequently said

For endeavour’s a virtue, that’s true

And plugging away at things, brings it’s rewards

Great contentment and joy, should accrue

So, I do recommend, that you give things a try

When the world lets you down, and you’re hurting

Don’t get angry and bitter, and don’t be a quitter

You’ll succeed, or die trying, I’m certain
