Short, simple poems for our time

I wish I had never known you

If I had never known you
Your affairs would not concern me
The world is awash with rich and famous people
Whom I have never met
And I bear no ill to any of them

It's just that I did know you
And you are lodged forever in my consciousness
And now your success and prominence
Makes me angry and resentful

And I don't really know why

You were never prodigious
Largely unnoticed, an outsider looking in
But against the odds, you climbed higher than the rest of us
And I would just rather you had not
Because it pains me beyond remedy

It seems as though your name
Appears in every headline
And your face is omnipresent on screen and billboard
Your voice stalks the airwaves
and there is no escaping you

But if our paths should ever cross
I will feign delight that you have done so well
And I will convey my best wishes
For your future well-being
While my heart screams with rancour
